It has been two years since renovations started on Tavern on the Green in Central Park, but the finish line is in sight. The restaurant will open to the public for dinner on April 24, and reservations are now being accepted.
Gone is the jazzy glitter associated with Warner LeRoy, who put his stamp on the Tavern as most of us knew it before it closed with a 2009 New Year’s Eve party. Two years ago, the city awarded the lease to Jim Caiola and David Salama, Philadelphia restaurateurs. They have given it a more formal elegance with architectural references to the late-19th-century era of its origins as a sheepfold. In the Bar Room, closest to the entrance, are exposed rafters, trelliswork on the ceiling and a fireplace decorated with sheep’s heads and done in a plaster technique called scagliola, which mimics marble. As was every addition on Central Park’s Tavern on the Green, when the city gutted the antique restaurant, saving only the original 1880 sheepfold structure. Old gang turns out for Tavern grand opening

Tavern on the Green's gala reopening on May 13 after a four-year hiatus drew scores of celebrities, including some who started their careers at the landmark restaurant. Drew Nieporent—owner of Tribeca Grill and Nobu—was the restaurant director at the Central Park eatery from 1978 to 1982, at the same time that Carol Higgins Clark was a hostess there.
